Happiness, more or less

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing silk flower pattern shirtdress with yellow belt
Flowers in the garden

If my life had an anthem, it would be this song, “Lucky Man” by The Verve. I heard it for the first time in Maui, about twelve years ago. I had gone on vacation by myself and made a friend, Janusz. We had a blast and introduced each other to our favorite music. He got Air, Moon Safari. I got The Verve, Urban Hymns. Here’s an excerpt:

Happiness
More or less
It’s just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just where I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

Well, I’m a lucky man
With fire in my hands

Style tip, Sally Hansen's Salon Effects real nail polish strip in pink camouflage
Pretty in pink

I don’t often post on this topic but I couldn’t resist sharing with you my latest find. There was a conversation on Twitter recently between @thecoveted, @gritandglamour and @beautifullyInv about Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects in Denim. I keep my nails very short for snowboarding during the winter. Given that it’s the end of the season they haven’t been looking their best. Eureka! A solution! Real nail polish strips, perfect for this busy modern woman. I dashed to my local Walgreen’s and picked up pink camo. I’ll report back on how long they lasted, but for now, I’m tickled pink with the results.

{ style tip: }

A confident colorful belt against a contrasting pattern defines the waistline with drama. It’s especially flattering on a shapeless shirtdress; defining and accenting curves, drawing the eye in to your beautiful, unique-to-you body. Enjoy it, love it, you’re the sole owner of it.

Stretchy silk flower shirtdress/Express, yellow elastic belt/Anthropologie, aqua tights/unknown, black ballet flats/Ecco, (unseen), silver and mother-of-pearl necklace and cuff/Lois Hill.

FBFF Five

{ daily outfit: }

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing faux fur vest, hot pink cardigan, black skinny jeans
Something’s always funny around here

{ fbff: }

I’ve got twenty tabs open on any given computer, dog-eared magazines are strewn about, there are incomprehensible scribbles in several notebooks, lists of items coveted and I window shop with the precision eye tracking of a true professional.

What does it all mean?

This week, Fashion Beauty Friend Friday offers a simple question: What are the top five trends for spring that you have been looking forward to?

FBFF spring trends, lace
Lace
FBFF Spring trends, neutrals and wide leg pants
Neutrals and wide leg pants
FBFF Spring trends, botanical print dress and statement ring
Botanical print dresses and statement rings

In order of appearance:

Lace blouse, Unknown
Lace cuff, WhiteOwl, Etsy
Neutral dress, ModCloth
Wide leg pants, Nanette Lepore
Botanical print dress, Anthropologie
Statement ring, Alexis Bittar

I covet these. They reflect a time of renewal, a gentleness with which to ease into this next season. I want to feel a warm breeze on my skin, I want to smell the flowers in bloom. Perfect for spring, perfect for me.

Thank you Katy of Modly Chic for crafting this question. Friend Friday is an opportunity for fashion and beauty bloggers to share their thoughts on a specific topic and read what others have to say on that same topic. Faux fur vests are one of the most fun trends we’ve seen this past season. They’re warm and soft and are great for layering. They look best over a slim line because they add so much bulk. Keep the shape of your dress simple or your slacks sleek and uncomplicated. Naturally, they’re perfect with jeans.

Do you own any faux fur? How are you wearing it? Is it a vest or a coat? Do you wear it indoors or outdoors? How does it make you feel?

Hot pink cashmere cardigan/Bloomingdale’s, yellow owl t-shirt/Shana Logic, faux fur vest/Urban Outfitters, black ankle cigarette jeans/BDG, Urban Outfitters, brown embroidered boots, Aersoles.

This is my first Full Time Fabulous blog event. The theme is to create a visual representation of how our location in the world influences us. As a citizen of the world, I chose to express myself solely through pictures I’ve taken over the past couple of years. I wanted to create a story without words and deliberately left it open to interpretation. For more information, check out Kristy Eléna’s blog.

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing Pantone's color of the year, honeysuckle, with jeans
Honeysuckle and cedar, from Pantone’s colors of the year palette

I realized this morning that I have become so accustomed to wearing dresses everyday that pants, especially jeans, have become a novelty. I’ve had this blouse for a few months and was itching to wear it.

{ style tip: }

Wearing denim to work requires some attention to detail so as not to appear unprofessional, even in a casual atmosphere. A soft blouse is comfortable but still looks polished. Dressier shoes with a low or medium heel in a similar color palette add an unpredictable touch.

How do you wear your denim to work? Do you choose fun tops and funky flats, or do you dress them up with a structured shirt, heels and a blazer? Or do you pick something in between?

{ deets: }

Cedar green blouse/Modcloth, honeysuckle infinity scarf/Urban Outfitters, jeans/Calvin Klein, sage green shoes/Tsubo, necklace/Linkel Designs.

Cheese, please

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing orange cargo jacket, grey dress and goldenrod tights
I’ve got sunshine

There some things about me that are absolute truths. They’ve been part of my DNA for as long as I can remember. One such items is that I love to eat. I eat well, I eat with appreciation for where my food comes from, grateful for those who played a part in availing this sustenance to me. I eat with mindfulness, aware of the life force and nutrition. And, I eat all the time.

Call it a twenty-four hour buffet, a snack-a-thon, whatever you will. It comes down to this. I dislike being hungry. I go from zero to cranky with a pounding headache, therefore, I eat.

I’m dreaming of cheese

Imagine my delight as I sat at my desk unwrapping my Colby cheese stick this afternoon and looked down only to realize that my snack and my legs were the exact same color. What are the odds? I was half tempted to scan it but had obliterated most of it by the time of said discovery. It was the wiser of the choices to quietly finish eating given the logistics of scanning cheese. At work. And getting caught.

I really do have a lot of fun doing ordinary things. Especially as they relate to food and eating.

{ style tip: }

Neutral colors, such as this grey dress, can be revived with brighter color blocks in time for sunnier days. Goldenrod tights and a bright orange cargo jacket give it new life. The tights pick up on the faint swirl outlining the white flower, the hit of color is powerful and confident.

Do you have a particular neutral top, dress or skirt that could use a color lift? What color would you pair it with?

{ deets: }

Orange cargo jacket/Caslon, Nordstrom’s, grey Japanese inspired dress/unknown, goldenrod tights/Urban Outfitters, wood and leather platform sandals/Urban Outfitters, vintage daisy necklace/thrifted.

Manicure vs. life

05 Apr

{ daily outfit: }

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing pastel paisley dress with ivory shawl cardigan
Posing next to the lamb’s ear

You might have noticed that my fingernails are polished. This is a sign that I consciously chose to do nothing but thumb through the beast that is the March issue of Vogue for an hour on Sunday morning. While my beautiful orange nails dried I mapped out a day of much needed relaxation. I then proceeded to find my husband in the garden pulling weeds out of our little flower bed. So much for doing nothing.

Warm enough for bare arms

One hour later: I’ve dirt under my orange fingernails and have pulled at a tenacious rogue mint with so much gusto that I’ve slammed my hand agains the retaining wall. The thumbnail is scratched, another is scuffed. At times, I pine for a lifestyle that would allow my nails two, perhaps three days of intact existence. I seem to be too busy busting through life to achieve this.

Did I mention how much fun it was to pull weeds and talk about what kind of ground cover we should plant between the pansies that uncannily thrived and multiplied over winter? So much fun that we followed it up with an hour and a half hike.

Dainty details

{ style tip: }

When it’s too hot to wear tights but too early in the spring to bare your legs the daintiest of solutions lie in pastel fishnets. They not only add a hint of texture but do a wonderful job covering up the fact that your legs are not ready for summer. These were especially adorable adorned with hearts. Find a shade either slightly lighter or darker than your skin tone for a hint of contrast.

What do you do to prepare your legs for summer, do you have any particular routine or preparation? Do you get more exercise? Use tanners, or the old-fashioned sun?
