Guest blogger: Fashion For Giants

16 Jun

{ special feature: }

While I’m away on my honeymoon in France and Spain until June 17th I’ve lined up some very special guests for you. I wrote a little intro about what makes them so special to me here. I hope you enjoy their company in my absence. Keep checking back to see which guest will be making a special appearance next!

I’ll also be uploading picture to my facebook page whenever possible and hope to catch at least a few inspiring photos of French and Spanish style. Don’t forget to “like” The House in the Clouds to stay up on the latest news.

À bientôt,

Pleats Please

Hello, my name is Gracey:

Daily outfit, style tips, guest blogger Fashion For Giants

The absolutely fabulous Fabienne has invited me over from my blog, Fashion for Giants, to do a guest post for her.  I adore both Fabienne and her lovely blog so of course I jumped at the chance:

After accepting Fabienne’s invitation, I realized I had no idea what to talk about on someone else’s blog.  I mean, I barely know what to talk about on my blog.  Then, in a stroke of what I think we can all agree is genius, I decided to talk about something I love; pleated skirts.  I have been wearing a lot of pleated skirts lately and I think they are absolutely fabulous.  They are comfortable, good for riding a bike in, and one of the most appealing things about them for me; they are remarkably easy to thrift.

I mean, sure, you could spend $245 and get this Trina Turk pleated skirt:

Or, you could take that $245 and get this pleated skirt from THEORY instead:

Or, and I suggest you strongly consider this option, for under $10, you could head to your local thrift store and get a very similar skirt to the Trina Turk skirt:

Or one very similar to the THEORY skirt (with the added fun of polka dots!):

Or you could go out on a limb and find a fantastic poppy red pleated skirt:

I bought all of these skirts for under $8 at various thrift stores and I’m willing to bet (a small, nominal sum of money, don’t get excited) that your local second-hand store has all sorts of lovely pleated skirts too.  I’ll even give you a few tips to make it easier to find the perfect pleated skirt for you.

  • You want the pleats to begin well above your hips or below. Pleated skirts with drop-waists can be difficult to wear if you have any sort of booty at all.  If the pleats begin in the middle of your heinie it can add a lot of volume.
  • Skinny pleats (knife pleats) are easier to wear than larger pleats (such as box pleats).  A larger pleat will, once again, add volume to your frame.
  • Synthetic fibers keep pleats remarkably well.  A polyester skirt holds pleats like nobody’s business, so if you can stand unnatural fibers, go for polyester.
  • If you’re tall, like I am, try petite length skirts, they end up being the perfect midi or knee length.
  • You don’t have to wear midi or knee length pleats – there are plenty of pleated mini-skirts available at thrift stores too.

So, there you have it.  Wear pleated skirts.  Thrift them, don’t buy them.  And read Fashion for Giants.  But only if you want to.

Thank you all for letting me visit you here at The House in the Clouds!
