Daily outfit and style tip, featuring crackle nail art

I never truly realize my full potential for clumsiness until I attempt to paint my own nails. It would seem that the years of practice are totally lost on me, I still awkwardly get nail polish outside of the nail bed. I still proceed to slam into every surface before the nails have dried. I try to eat food. I do.

I stuck my hand earlier into a bowl of tortilla chips.

That’s why I usually opt to pay a professional. But things are looking up, my friends. I might have finally found the nail polish for me; the one that loves me back. Crackle. Camouflage for the clumsy. I can see this action making a repeat performance. I even think that next time around it will look better, they say practice makes perfect.

Daily outfit and style tip, featuring manicure products

I had to buy a few things to do this right. I needed a base coat, top coat and color dryer. Here’s a list of all the products I used:

  • Sally Hansen Advanced Hard as Nails Nylon + Retinol Strengthener
  • Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Snappy Sorbet
  • Sally Hansen Crackle Overcoat in Fuchsia Shock
  • Sally Hansen Nail Shine Miracle Top Coat
  • Sally Hansen Dry Kwik Nail Color Dryer

I basically laid a single coat of everything listed, in that order. Next time I will put two coats of the bottom color to make it richer. If you go back and look at the first picture there’s no top coat and the crackle is matte which, in hindsight, I think looks pretty cool. Next time, no shiny top coat on top of the crackle. Maybe I’ll try the shiny top coat before applying the matte crackle for extra contrast. I love playing with contrasting textures. What do you think, shiny or matte crackle?

Spring has sprung

29 Mar
Daily outfit white tuxedo shirt, burgundy boyfriend cardigan and obi belt
Formal. But casual.

Some days feel like a rebirth of sorts. Some weeks are bullies pushing their sunshine way into my heart and soul. This happens to be one of those weeks. Patience finds itself at the end of a road, motivation runs at an all-time high. I have things I want to do and I’m going to start doing them now.

Spring has sprung

I’ve been coming home these past few weeks to a sun-filled living room, spring bursting through the windows without permission. I picked up a magazine tonight while grocery shopping. I sat on my bed and read for twenty minutes. For the first time in months I didn’t feel like I was running behind.

I still aspire to read for hours and hours, flipping switches and turning on lights while the light changes around me. But you know what? I’ll take those twenty minutes, I’ll laugh at the silly antics occurring in my household and it will feel really, really good. Spring is finally here in my world. How do you like that hot pink lip gloss from Joe Fresh? Spring landed right here on my face!

Coworker looks at my shoes and says “new wheels?” Me: “yes”

How is spring treating you? Do you find yourself emerging? Do you find yourself recharged? I’m dedicating this post to Bella of The Citizen Rosebud. We have had very different objectives for our Northern California weather. I want storm after storm, it means snowboarding.

Bella, this sunshine is for you, honey.

Deets: Tuxedo shirt/Nordstrom’s, obi belt/restyled, black skinny jeans/BDG, Urban Outfitters, fishnets/We Love Colors, red suede shoes/thrifted Dansko, mother-of-pearl silver necklace and cuff/Lois Hill, gifted.

30 for 30 Winter, Day 21

07 Mar
Sitting in my garden

Sitting pretty in aqua

Standing against the fence

The outfit in its entirety

An obi belt I made myself

The obi belt I made with two silk ties

Bracelets from H&M

Love the color of these dainty bracelets!

Patterned tights and cool bag from Argentina

My purse against the pattern of the tights

I’m officially behind on getting pictures up but, on the other hand, I’ve got a slew of cool snowboarding photos. I’ll spare you most, but do stay tuned for my favorite. It has to do with a sign, a skull and crossbones, and me and the hubby. Grinning.

Fine, twist my arm, I’ll just tell you all about it. We posed like tourists in front of the “Experts Only” sign for the double black diamond run we did six times. Cheesy, yes, but in a good way. I’ll get it up soon for your viewing pleasure. We look silly, I’m warning you.

Deets: Aqua cashmere cardi/Bloomingdale’s, black dress/MaxStudio, patterned tights/Cynthia Crowley, obi belt/ReStyled as shown here, black leather ankle boots/Munro, teal and silver tone bracelets/H&M, hand-made glass bead necklace/gifted, purse/gifted from Argentina.

Project ReStyle

01 Mar
boots, glitter, dyi

Magical boots

We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore. A while back I read about this project on A Beautiful Mess and was intrigued. Since I’m one who’s propensity to take on more than I realistically should sometimes gets me in trouble I found myself hesitant to officially commit.

One baby step at a time moved me forward onto the path of completion. I was inspired by these gold shoes. I’d wanted a pair of silvery shoes or boots for a while. These ankle boots were in the bag going to Out of The Closet when I saved them just in the nick of time. They’re made very well, the sole and last are still in perfect condition and they were pricey because they accommodate custom orthotics. However, several winters of daily wear and tear on San Francisco’s streets and sidewalks eventually tore and scratched much of the leather.

A well-loved pair of boots

Harkening back to my Bowie days, I immediately knew what I wanted to do. First, I coated them in a metallic indoor/outdoor bronze paint. Afterwards, they got several coats of magical glitter spray paint. Magical really is the name of the color, I’m not being fancy.

Two bronze base layers

I expect them to crack a bit and get rugged. That’s the kind of rock star character I want for these beauties. What’s left to say besides this?

Mission Accomplished!

Bowie would be proud

Last night kicked off the first monthly craft night that my friends and I put together. Knitting needles came out, lessons were given, buttons were secured back on and I officially started on the infinity scarf I’m giving away. This Wednesday I will be announcing the winner of my first ever giveaway. Check back to see who the lucky guy or gal is!

30 for 30 Winter, day 15. Riding the DYI horse

23 Feb

Rockin’ the plaid and patterns

One obi belt coming right up

You say “belt”, I say “bracelet”

Check it out! I’m feeling good about myself because I’m wearing two things I made today. That’s right, look who’s riding high and mighty on her DYI horse. Me!

I mentioned buying a couple of silk ties recently to make an obi belt, as seen in this tutorial from Angie of Fashion Me Blog. I did it! I made the belt and then I broke a bunch of rules about mixing patterns and look what came of it. Uh-huh.

On top of that, see that cool leather cuff with the embroidery on it? Yeah, that used to be a belt. I thrifted that little puppy, trimmed it, punched a hole in it and wore it. The beauty of these two projects is that they took almost no time. Extra bonus points!

Don’t forget to enter my first ever giveaway! Details here.

Deets: Plaid dress/Gifted from Dotty of Dash Dot Dotty, hot pink tank top/unknown, brown tights/unknown, vegan brown suede boots/Munro, obi belt/me, necklace/Anthropologie, hand-carved wood earrings/Chicago, three kitties ring/gifted.

30 for 30 Winter, day 14. It’s giveaway time!

22 Feb

I see someone running towards me in the distance

Photobombed!

Ditched the slips, ahem, “skirt”

Two slips = one skirt

It’s official, the giveaway is on! This is so exciting for me. I started this blog as a means to capture my attempt to remix outfits for Kendi’s 30 for 30 challenge in Fall. I did it on a whim, it just felt right. I had no real plan of action, rather than testing the water I dove right in. The last few years have brought their share of challenges and I really felt like I was ready for something new, something to inspire and energize me. Little did I know this would be it.

From the second follower on, I’ve been delighted and surprised. The only reason the first doesn’t count is because it’s the hubby and I pleaded for him to follow me and be my first. Look, sometimes you just have to play the spousal card.

One of the coolest things about this blog for me is the accountability. It’s no longer a scribble on the back of an envelope of something I might do, some idea or dream I have, it’s a public declaration complete with you as my witnesses. Apparently, it’s what I need to get things done around here. I’d been wanting a creative outlet but could never find the time. I’d been wanting to work on writing but, yes, same excuse. Not only have I found the time, however challenging it can be, I discovered a social network of like-minded individuals who are supportive, inspiring and really cool people. I’ve been lucky enough to meet one already, (yay, Mackenzie!) and look forward to meeting a bunch more on March 11 for Style Nation 2011 in Las Vegas.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my first ever giveaway! I bring you The Infinity Scarf. It’s also known as the only cool thing I’ve ever knitted with two stitches.

Lookin’ good,

stayin’ warm…

… and cozy!

I wanted to celebrate reaching a certain number of followers by giving something back. If I’m going to talk about learning how to knit, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is. What better way to do it than to knit a gift? The rules of engagement are as follows:

• It’s open to anyone following me, new or old. If you’re not following through Google Friend Connect, let me know how you’re following.

• In the comment section, let me know you want the scarf. It will be identical to the one I’m wearing.

• I will include all followers who said they would like the scarf from the previous post.

• Giveaway ends this coming Sunday, February 27.

• I will announce the winner next week.

It’s time to be Fabulous in February. Here’s the deal, this is the month of love and every Monday, Tuesday if you’re me and you were snowboarding yesterday, it’s all about self-love. Those of us participating are declaring publicly three things we love about ourselves. Here we go, three more things:

Number One: I like that I stop and smell the flowers. It’s always worth it. I’ll stop to look at a view, check out a critter, pet a dog, examine tree bark. You name it. If I can be intrigued and dawdle, you can bet I’ll stop.

Number Two: I like my fingernails. They’re pretty strong and naturally shaped pretty well. They would grow really long if I didn’t keep them short for snowboarding.

Number Three: I like that I tell my friends I love them all the time. Let there never be any doubt. I have a huge heart and don’t foresee running out of love anywhere in my future. It’s like the never ending fountain of love over here, for real.

- – - – -

At last, the outfit! I wore the reindeer dress with a couple slips underneath for workplace modesty. I layered an opaque black slip with a lace trim slip which I ditched after work and replaced with legwarmers for dinner with my in-laws.

Deets: Reindeer dress/ModCloth, opaque black slip/Commando, lace trim black slip/unknown, light blue tights/We Love Colors, grey legwarmes/H&M, bracelets/H&M, elastic top slip-on shoes/Munro.

30 for 30 Winter, day 13. It’s almost time for my giveaway

19 Feb

One lucky winner will get an identical scarf personally knitted by me

A complete remix delight

Zipper surprise!

It’s all about the textures

I’d better start knitting because one more follower and I will be holding my first ever giveaway. I promised that when I hit fifty followers I would knit an identical infinity scarf as the one shown, which I can’t seem to stop wearing these days. Thank the ladies at the store who talked me into believe I needed three spools of yarn to knit one scarf. I didn’t even use up one spool completely. Yes, I have a lot of this yarn left over.

I meant to wear this lace dress with a sweater which had short sleeves but I found that winter is once again upon us in the Bay Area and it was too cold. Like the quick-change artist that I can be at times in the morning, I pulled on this shimmery coffee t-shirt underneath for what appeared to be a total disaster. Rescue came in the shape of a priority swap; what if the shirt was over the dress? And what if I added a mustard yellow belt? What if this outfit ended up totally rocking?

This is officially one of my favorite unexpected outfits. I can’t wait for the remix to be over so that I may wear it again and again and (gasp!) again!

Deets: Lace dress/Jeremy’s, rust tights/We Love Colors, shimmery coffee t-shirt/Michael Starts, mustard belt/Anthropologie, vegan brown suede boots/Munro, infinity scarf/yours truly.
