Every so often, when thrifting, I come across something I just can’t resist. I may not have any idea how I’m going to make it work, I may not even be sure it matches anything, but it has to be mine. All mine.

I saw this vintage gold sleeveless boxy top and didn’t even try it on. It taunted me with its sparkle.

It looked like it would fit. Lucky for me, it did. With a little patience I was able to eventually put together the perfect ensemble. The boxy top is, well, boxy. Not the best style for this bod, another thrifted find in the form of a gold braided skinny belt literally cinched it to perfection. Paired with dark skinny jeans and a shaped black blazer, voila!

The blazer has been in my closet a few years. It’s fully lined and made of a nice lightweight wool. I had the sleeves hemmed when I first bought it, however, it’s been difficult to wear because of the unique shape of front. It lent itself to creating the perfect peek-a-boo for a hint of gold belt.

Did you see the shoes? They’re unbelievable awesome, I feel like wearing them should give me super powers. I’ll let you know if any materialize.

Don’t give up on an item at first pass. Give yourself some time to see what other treasure might come your way to solve your problem just the way the skinny belt made the boxy top shapelier for me.

Show me your shorts! – A blog event

01 Aug

{ blog event: }

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing ivory shorts, peach blazer, blue suede platform sandals

Now, get your mind out of the gutter! This is my story. I have never worn shorts except for running, outdoor park and beach days or hanging around the house. This is relatively new to me, I was initially inspired by a picture that Stephanie of The Loudmouth posted of herself some months back. All of a sudden, it seemed like everyone was wearing shorts but me. Alright, not everyone but it was my perception at the time. I decided to give it a shot.

I first wore them on a date with my hubby, it seemed like a pretty safe way to dip my toes. Next, I wore them to a friend’s party. One thing led to another and next thing you know, I finally did the unthinkable, I wore a pair to work last week. I had attempted the week before and chickened out. Yes, I do that sometimes.

It might come as a surprise that I had to really push myself to do this given that my outfit choices are not particularly conservative. I wear a lot of bright colors and I have tattoos but this was just new to me. I saw it as a way to step outside my comfort zone, something I’m actually comfortable doing. What I mean is that I like the challenge of pushing myself to do something new, something different. There’s a lot of personal growth to gain from taking chances. It’s easy to play it safe, I fall prey to complacency often.

Then I see someone wearing shorts and I’m intrigued and inspired; I know I must push myself repeatedly in this life and step up. It is only through trial and error that we get to realize our potential.

It isn’t the initial fear or hesitation, it isn’t the discomfort that defines us, it’s what we do with it when we experience it. How are you defining yourself?

There’s a song on Paul Simon’s Graceland album called “Further to Fly”. I think of it as my personal anthem. As long as I can dream, as long as the cycle of life continues, there is further to fly. Now I’m wearing shorts with the sass of someone who’s done it all along. You know I’m keeping an eye out for that next challenge. Whether it be sartorial, physical or professional, it will inevitable be very personal.

Won’t you join me?

Send me your photos of how you’re rockin’ the shorts and in two weeks, on Monday, August 15, I will post them and link back to you. My goal is to inspire you to challenge yourself and share with others how you’ve done it. Every time we push ourselves, even doing something as simple as wearing something we don’t typically wear, we grow as individuals. You’re helping me grow, let’s do this together.

I’m calling out to all you lovelies who are already wearing shorts to show us how you do it and I’m calling on those of you who don’t wear shorts to go for it, dip your toes in that water, the temperature is just right. Send me your photos at flyingfabu [at] gmail [dot] com by Friday, August 12, with a little blurb either about your outfit or the experience of wearing the shorts. Let’s make this happen!

Daily outfit and style tips, wearing green and white dress, ochre elastic belt, gold tights, platform sandals

This is the blogging equivalent of dine-and-dash, it’s more like blog-and-dash. It’s been a busy week since our return. While most of my life is back to normal, I’m still struggling to get all the loose ends tied, blogging and regular exercise being the two primary things of importance that are crying out for my attention.

It was Fil’s birthday yesterday.

I’m using that as my excuse this week. We had a lovely dinner at his favorite restaurant in San Francisco, Prospect, followed by a cocktail at Bourbon and Branch. Then we called it a night, it was only Tuesday after all.

I went from demure to 80′s rocker chick for the occasion. I couldn’t help but pose next to the first layer of new curtains I put up right in front of the wall I painted last weekend. Nesting ahoy! Also, it was raining outside. Not just drizzling or misting, pouring rain!

See you later!

Confession

02 May

{ daily outfit: }

Daily outfit and style tips, wearing white shorts and vintage ivory blouse
A sophomore attempt

I have a confession to make. I have never before in my life dressed up a pair of shorts. Not until last month, anyway. After seeing Stephanie of The Loudmouth and her friend Bryn rock the shorts in Vegas, I knew I had to try it. I dipped my toes, so to speak, at my friend’s birthday party knowing I was in a safe place should things start feeling awkward. As it turns out everything worked out just fine. I’m always amazed at how trying something new can feel so daunting.

I figured if I could pull it off once, I can pull off again.

I picked up these litte babies a few weeks ago, the eyelets and the fact that they’re made of organic cotton did me in. I had a vision of wearing them out on a date. We were invited to a tequila tasting in San Francisco on Saturday, which we followed up with dinner at a new restaurant. It was a fairly warm late afternoon and I had my coat with me. For those of you who don’t know San Francisco’s weather, it rarely gets hot and often gets chilly in the evenings, hence the precautionary coat. My outfit was incredibly comfortable—of course it was—I was wearing shorts! I was even complimented which is always a nice treat.

The gold tights are very shimmery

We tasted about six brands of tequila; starting with blanco, continuing with reposado and finishing with añejo. If they offered a special reserve of some sort we tasted those also at the end. The concept behind tasting the blanco first is that it’s still young and the forward flavor is representative of what will be the foundation which carries into the more aged reposado and añejo. If you don’t like the blanco at all, it’s likely that you won’t enjoy the more aged tequila of that harvest either.

And you thought this blog was just about fashion.

This is what happens when you’re married to a man who knows his spirits. A little is bound to rub off. My favorite tequila of the night was the Casa 7 Leguas. As much fun as it was to taste tequila there was only so much stimulation my palate could handle before calling it quits. As you can imagine, we had a lovely time.

{ style tip: }

Go for it! Be adventurous and daring, try something new! If it feels daunting, give it a trial run when visiting close friends just like I did. You’ll be more comfortable and should there be a wardrobe malfunction you can all have a good laugh.

Project ReStyle

01 Mar
boots, glitter, dyi

Magical boots

We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore. A while back I read about this project on A Beautiful Mess and was intrigued. Since I’m one who’s propensity to take on more than I realistically should sometimes gets me in trouble I found myself hesitant to officially commit.

One baby step at a time moved me forward onto the path of completion. I was inspired by these gold shoes. I’d wanted a pair of silvery shoes or boots for a while. These ankle boots were in the bag going to Out of The Closet when I saved them just in the nick of time. They’re made very well, the sole and last are still in perfect condition and they were pricey because they accommodate custom orthotics. However, several winters of daily wear and tear on San Francisco’s streets and sidewalks eventually tore and scratched much of the leather.

A well-loved pair of boots

Harkening back to my Bowie days, I immediately knew what I wanted to do. First, I coated them in a metallic indoor/outdoor bronze paint. Afterwards, they got several coats of magical glitter spray paint. Magical really is the name of the color, I’m not being fancy.

Two bronze base layers

I expect them to crack a bit and get rugged. That’s the kind of rock star character I want for these beauties. What’s left to say besides this?

Mission Accomplished!

Bowie would be proud

Last night kicked off the first monthly craft night that my friends and I put together. Knitting needles came out, lessons were given, buttons were secured back on and I officially started on the infinity scarf I’m giving away. This Wednesday I will be announcing the winner of my first ever giveaway. Check back to see who the lucky guy or gal is!

30 for 30 Winter, day 8. WYSIWYG

12 Feb

That’s some bed head

This baby girl is au naturel. That’s right, I’m not wearing a spec of make-up nor is my hair done yet. I was determined to get a picture, this is one of my favorite outfits so far. I threw my hair brush and make-up in a bag, ran out with the tripod, snapped a few and quickly ran to the car. I have no shame.
I woke up too late to accommodate all that needed to be accomplished in the morning. The hubby had an early meeting on Friday, yours truly had a late night on Thursday and with very good reason. I met up with fellow blogger Mackenzie of Whatever, Gatsby. She’s in San Francisco for a week, we caught Martha Wainwright singing Edith Piaf at the Great American Music Hall.

The show was just mind-blowing, Piaf is no easy chanteuse to emulate yet Wainwright did this icon justice in vocal acuity, intensity and performance. Her own songs were equally enthralling. The hall is a beautiful ornate and intimate venue, perfect for such a performance. Meeting one of my favorite bloggers and hanging out in such a setting made for a wonderful evening. If you haven’t met Mackenzie yet, let me introduce you to a woman with a great sense of humor, a love for the magical nature of words who also bubbles with a contagious enthusiasm and joie de vivre. She’s just as delightful in person as she is on her blog.

In case you were wondering, I represented my Friday red for Go Red for Women with the unexpected hint of a belt. If you were around for the last 30 for 30 Fall challenge, you’ve probably recognized the mustard dress. I can’t get enough of it and thought it would be fun to find even more ways to remix it. The tights are actually a shimmery gold, they’re really quite a scene.

Deets: Mustard dress/ModCloth, infinity scarf/knitted by me, plum poncho/unknown, red belted/swished, gold tights/Urban Outfitters, vegan faux cowboy boots/ModCloth, hand-carved wood earrings/Chicago, silver and mother-of-pearl cuff/Lois Hill.

30 for 30, day 23. Basketball.

30 Nov
I love gold

Patterns and textures

I’m developing a fondness for basketball. Mind you, I’m not talking about the real sport that is basketball, I’m talking about that special phenomenon that is gym basketball. And I’m not talking about playing, either, I’m talking about watching it.

You see, the treadmills at my gym are placed in several locations. The first option, which I will refer to as the Trauma Viewing Station, is primarily facing the over-sized television monitors featuring a national news station. The second option, which I will refer to as the Testosterone Station, faces the basketball courts.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the impact which the (bad) news has on my running performance is not ideal. My eyes keep darting away from the monitor, yet I get sucked in over and over again by flashing headlines of found body parts and missing children. I almost cried the other day. Like I said, not ideal.

The Testosterone Station, on the other hand, is male primal behavior at its best. I confessed my fascination to my friend Ross last night. There’s a lot of jumping around, grunting and yelling, running back and forth; sometimes they even run into each other. It’s much more entertaining. I’m starting to recognize some of the regulars and developing nicknames for them, such as “Roger.”

Time flies when you’re watching grown men play. I’m very interested in staying healthy, especially given my daily morning chocolate indiscretions. This morning I was out of chocolate, unfortunately. I had to seek comfort elsewhere and found it by means of my gold leather belt.

I initially bought it for a Burning Man costume. It has since been integrated as a sometime key player in my wardrobe. I decided to shoot these photos indoors to feature our vintage raised felt wallpaper which complimented the gold pattern on my blouse. The pictures don’t do it justice. Imagine textured wallpaper. Feel it with your eyes closed. Perfect!

Deets: Cream sweater/Old Navy, Satin blouse/BCBG, grey cropped ankle pants/Express, gold leather belt/unknown, vintage brooch/gifted, black ankle boots/Munro.
