Not just for experts only—Getting your blog off the ground.

The Wall at Kirkwood. Our favorite run of the day

A couple days ago it dawned on me that although my commenting system was greatly improved since my move from Blogger to WordPress, it was still missing a crucial element. I had been taking the time to reply to many of the comments left by you for naught. Without a reply notification plug-in, you would never know I had done so. On one hand, it seemed so trivial, on the other, it was a glaringly obvious how much more I had to learn.

I reflected on the fact that it was barely six months ago when I thought starting a blog would be fun. Well, it’s been a lot of fun. And it’s been a lot of hard work. Blogging is not limited to experts only, fortunately, there are some wonderful souls out there who have taken the care and time to share their experiences and knowledge base with the rest of us.

30 for 30 remix challenge, day 22. Ivory lace dress, vintage sweater and cowboy boots.

Birds making a pleasant commotion on day 22 of the 30 for 30 remix challenge.

Without them, this blog would not be what it is today. My success here and anywhere else, is and always has been, the result of collaboration and support. I would like to share a few of the resources I turned to in the past few months. By no means is this list complete, it’s merely a sampling of the information out there. If you’re already blogging, or are thinking of starting, check out some of these links. I have relied on the first seven at different times, the rest I think you might find useful.

Build a better blog

While I couldn’t remember the original site I turned to for grammatical assistance, I did find this one which is equally helpful. You may be the smartest cookie around but if you are misspelling regularly and don’t have the basics of English grammar down, your readers are going to think you’re dumb. Or worse yet, that you just don’t care. Like I said, blogging is fun but it’s also hard work.

Last but not least, last week I wrote about the correlation between your blog and branding. It’s a topic I’ve reflected upon on this journey and believe it’s good food for thought. While I may still have a long way to go, I’m confident that I’m headed in the right direction. I’m enjoying the journey and hope you are, too.

30 for 30 Winter, day 13. It’s almost time for my giveaway

19 Feb

One lucky winner will get an identical scarf personally knitted by me

A complete remix delight

Zipper surprise!

It’s all about the textures

I’d better start knitting because one more follower and I will be holding my first ever giveaway. I promised that when I hit fifty followers I would knit an identical infinity scarf as the one shown, which I can’t seem to stop wearing these days. Thank the ladies at the store who talked me into believe I needed three spools of yarn to knit one scarf. I didn’t even use up one spool completely. Yes, I have a lot of this yarn left over.

I meant to wear this lace dress with a sweater which had short sleeves but I found that winter is once again upon us in the Bay Area and it was too cold. Like the quick-change artist that I can be at times in the morning, I pulled on this shimmery coffee t-shirt underneath for what appeared to be a total disaster. Rescue came in the shape of a priority swap; what if the shirt was over the dress? And what if I added a mustard yellow belt? What if this outfit ended up totally rocking?

This is officially one of my favorite unexpected outfits. I can’t wait for the remix to be over so that I may wear it again and again and (gasp!) again!

Deets: Lace dress/Jeremy’s, rust tights/We Love Colors, shimmery coffee t-shirt/Michael Starts, mustard belt/Anthropologie, vegan brown suede boots/Munro, infinity scarf/yours truly.

30 for 30 Winter, day 6. Dilated pupils

08 Feb
Playing up the plum in the skirt with the tights
Pattern on pattern, can’t get enough of it

Vintage earring as brooch

Wild and windy

My new glasses came in and boy are they cool! I’m so excited to have them! I have a little secret, these are my first pair of progressive lenses, I’ll be able to wear them all day on the computer. I finished off my visit to the optometrist with a little pupil dilation, I’m happy to report all is well. I’ve got about another minute in me before signing off the computer, I can barely focus. That’s just how committed I am to posting today. I’ve slipped on my fanciest blogging shoes* and I’m ready to go.

Deets: Recycled sweaters skirt/Urban Outfitters, black tank top/Nordstrom’s, aqua cashmere cardigan/Bloomingdale’s, black leather skinny belt/Norstrom’s, plum tights/Hue, black lace tights/Urban Outfitters, black hand-knitted scarf/made with love by Stacy, vintage clip-on earring worn as brooch/thrifted, blue topaz ring/unknown, black leather ankle boots/Munro.

Mediterranean Sunset Dreams

16 Dec
Of course I’m smiling. I just ate some delicious chocolates.

The pearls barely peeked through, exactly how I wanted

Aqua and gold. A calm, deep aqua sea against the striking gold of a hot setting summer sun. Since the Mediterranean is currently off-limits for certain logistical reasons, primarily that my physical being is in Northern California, I shall dream of a different place and season by wearing my imagination.

When I first bought this dress I deemed it too vertically challenged for work but have since grown accustomed to it. In fact, I quite like it. I feel bolder with two pairs of tights on, the juxtaposition of grey lace against the teal tights adds dimension, visual interest and warmth as they disappear into my faux cowboy boots.

Old Faithful makes yet another appearance in its cashmere glory; talk about a sweater that has withstood the test of time. The gold elastic belt does my waistline justice, regardless of the fact that I started my day with Haribo Gold Bears and ended it with four divine CocoaBella chocolates. Somewhere in between all this was a cheddar cheese stick, a frozen Indian entree and half a fruit and nut bar but dinner remains to be seen.

You might have taken notice of the different background. These photos were taken at work, I left the house in a messy mad dash this morning and didn’t have a chance to shoot. My friend Euan at work has been kind enough to take these, as he happens to be quite a kind and skilled photographer. Cross your fingers, I’m hoping his talent make a regular appearance here.

We’re having lunch next week, I’ll keep you updated!

Deets: Dijon dress/ModCloth, aqua cashmere cardigan/Bloomingdale’s, yellow elastic belt/Anthropologie, grey lace tights/Hue, aqua tights/Hue, grey boots/ModCloth, pearl necklace/gifted, grey and teal infinity scarf/hand-made by Stacy.

30 for 30, day THIRTY!

08 Dec
In repose at Modern Coffee in Oakland. The best coffee shop ever!

Soft n’ fuzzy

‘Tis the season to… Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Who brought Labor Day back? Judge not so fast, my friends, these are my Winter Whites. That’s right, all soft and woolly and creamy dreamy. Not, I repeat, not the crisp stark whites I used to wear in my LL Bean catalog fantasy life when my good-looking catalog husband and I went sailing. I wouldn’t go as far as calling this the pièce de résistance but I wouldn’t take it out with the trash tonight, either.

I tried to go out with a big fuzzy creamy bang except I’d pretty much run out of interesting options. Really, just trust me on that. That’s because I’m officially all done with the remix and I know exactly what I’m wearing tomorrow. You got a sneak peek earlier. I can’t wait!

I have to admit, it feels a little like The End of something. I’m going to take a few days and collect my thoughts on the experience. I will leave you with just this:

I passed up a holiday party to go running tonight. I’m either losing my marbles or I’m growing up, (I’m so proud of my adult self!) Oh, don’t look so concerned, there’s another on Friday. With cocktails.

Deets: Creamy sweater wrap/Old Navy, creamy lacy dress/YaYa Nom de Plume, skinny black belt/Nordstrom’s, black flower accessory/H&M, creamy knit tights/Hue, black leather ankle boots/Munro, tree of life necklace/gifted, kitties ring/gifted, hand-carved wood earrings/somewhere in Chicago.

30 for 30, day 16. Rocker Girl.

23 Nov
That’s my rocker chick pose

I was trying not to freeze without my jacket on

Some days are better with a doughnut. I started the day by nixing my original outfit then trying different ways to accessorize, all of which left me feeling ho hum with a huge mess to clean up later. When I realized how late I was running, I dashed out the door wearing what you see, complete with rocker hair, (which I swear was just way bigger in real life.)

As it turned out, this combo came together surprisingly well. The little touches of lace added personality whereas I might have otherwise ended up feeling a little plain. Not bad for a day that included last minute outfit changes, toothpaste drips on pants and the major sadness of a new stain on my cyan puffy birthday jacket.

And let’s not forget that hair.

(Just in case you were curious, I had a doughnut at lunch.)

Deets: Green cashmere pullover sweater/Bloomingdale’s, pewter tank top/Nordstrom’s, cream lace scarf/Urban Outfitters, dusty rose pin/Georgiou, sage cargo pants/J Brand, Anthropologie, black ankle boots, Munro, cat eye sunglasses/Michael Kors.
