Twelve days

05 Aug

{ personal: }

I spent twelve days traveling last month, fourteen if you tack on a quick two-day work trip spent mostly on planes. Some was pleasure, a lot of it was business, all of it was fun. I was back in Manhattan for a few days here and there. And since you asked, yes, it was during the heatwave.

Let me explain something about us Northern Californians, more specifically, those of us who live within a fifteen mile radius of San Francisco. It’s a hot day when it’s 77° out. It’s a scorcher if it’s 82° and it’s a proper heat wave it breaks 85°. I don’t know what to do with myself when it’s 100° out. I really don’t.

I drank a lot of water and tried to move slowly. I also tried to pretend I wasn’t sweating profusely the entire time. My body was in shock, my brain on vacation. I hit American Apparel for some shorts, (neon pink corduroy!), a bunch of tank tops and a headband. The most wonderful thing about it was being warm at night.

Since I was not operating in familiar and particularly photogenic surroundings, I recreated some of my favorite outfits upon my return home. Most noteworthy was the long skirt I picked up at Topshop. Lightweight, sheer, vibrant and sexy. Perfectly comfortable without compromising style. Love.

Another favorite is The Sweater. It’s been a while since an item of clothing drew me in and held me captive. It’s the most unbelievably inconvenient sweater. Oversized and floppy, no buttons, no belt, no tie, nothing. With a hood. What do I want with a hood? Oh, but love at first sight is fierce and no logic would deter me from making that practically deconstructed sweater mine. I wear it all the time.

I’m going to wear it again tomorrow.

Show & Tell

27 Dec

{ the story: }

There are those days when nothing seems to go right. Then, there are days when every single little detail falls into place, when the universe conspires to help you get everything right; it was one of those days. In my last post I wore I a navy blue pencil skirt that I picked up from a small, independently-owned shop that had just opened by my work in Downtown Oakland. I mentioned wanting to make more mindful purchasing decisions. I’m not looking for a revolution but I believe that paying just a little more attention will present opportunities for me to make the small changes necessary to live more closely to my heart, while looking fabulous the whole time, of course.

Let’s see exactly what happened on that fateful day. I happened to be in the dressing room of Show & Tell when I overheard the owner talk about their store’s philosophy to another customer. I loved what I heard, that they support local designers and fair trade practices with a focus on being paperless and sustainable; I wanted to help them thrive. It didn’t hurt that their clothes were really cute and the owners really nice. That stuck with me all day until I came up with the idea of taking pictures of different outfits in their store to promote them on The House in the Clouds. Nothing fancy, just me, my tripod and the overhead fluorescent lights. I approached them with the idea, they seemed happy and pleasantly surprised. I had the green light.

That same afternoon, I was directing a photo shoot at work and was telling the photographer of my plan. He offered to do an entire fashion shoot on location for us for the same reasons I wanted to do it: for support and for fun. I let the the shop owners Alyah and Nichole know, this suddenly went up a few notches and we were all totally thrilled. The very next Sunday, or as I like to refer to it, on the coldest day of the year so far, four of us walked around Downtown Oakland and had a blast taking pictures while curious onlookers checked out the scene.

The following is the result of our collective enthusiasm. If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, stop by the shop sometime and check out what they have. It goes without saying the clothes are adorable and flattering.

Show & Tell is owned by Alyah Baker and Nichole Payton and is located at 500 12th Street in the Oakland City Center Plaza. All clothes shown are from their store; jewelry, tights and shoes are my own. Check out their facebook page for updates. Embrace the magpie

I have an inner magpie that rivals old Hollywood glamour. The problem with this is that I don’t have the lifestyle to express it. Sequins and rhinestones and glitter, oh my; those are all lovely words to my ears. They enchant me with their song of ritz and glitz, I want to add feather boas and faux fur stoles to their melody and stroll.

If I can’t have that, I can have this: Tom’s silver glitter slip-ons.

I wore the discoteque on my feet all day, I’m going to do it again, too. I’d been coveting them for a while, the desire for glitter growing even more potent when my friend Nicole got a pair of gold ones. I’ve been waiting until I could justify wearing a light spring shoe. My friends, the time has come. As the day refused to quit I ran laps in what felt like slippers on my feet. Awesome slippers. One could say I’m a fan.

{ style tip: }

You really can wear something extravagant and glittery during the day, style and context are everything. The glitter made these shoes fun and gave them plenty of character, however, the casual form and style made them easy to wear with a cotton skirt and t-shirt. I chose to balance the glitter with a bold silver necklace and matching cuff. The outfit ended up well-balanced and comfortable.

Go take a hike!

Rather than go running this evening, my hubby and I went for a hike. Remember those t-shirts that said “Go Take A Hike”? You don’t? It’s probably because it goes back to the time when dinosaurs roamed the earth terrorized by the likes of me and my two sisters. In any case, I totally want one. Hiking is awesome.

There are a bunch of trails by my house that smell like fresh earth and trees. Overgrown happiness stretch out onto the path and brush the legs of runners, hikers and dogs. Any contact will do, that stuff grows wild and doesn’t care about anything else. If it gets too big it just falls over.

We talked about everything and nothing, time slowed under the spell of the canopy. Dogs ran past and smiled. My ears, eyes, heart and mind were happy.
