Daily outfit and style tips, wearing coral ruffle tank, sage green shorts, blazer
Smiling with the flowers

I recently went back to the town I grew up in for lunch on a weekend. We were seated and served. All the while I couldn’t help but fixate on the faces around, familiar and strange at the same time. I recognized familial facial features and could take a guess at which families of my childhood they belonged to. How odd to consider that we can look so much like our parents and siblings, our cousins and aunts and uncles that we can be identified by strangers as belonging to our tribe.

I walked into a Lower Haight street bar years ago to have the bartender ask me if I had a sister, proceeding to then describe my sister. We didn’t even live in the same city let alone run in the same circles. She was referring to my youngest sister who’s seven years younger than me, has slightly lighter skin and very long curly black hair.

At the time, I had very short blond hair.

I know we look alike but it’s because I know we’re about the same size, I know her face and her expression as intimately as I know my own. But how does a stranger know? Do we look so much like family in a poorly lit neighborhood bar that we give it away that easily?

I’m always amazed at the similarities between my sisters and I; the same smile, the same exact reactions and facial expressions to what someone said. What a precious thing it is to experience bits of myself in the mirror of my tribe.

As you’ve probably noticed by now, I’m hooked on this whole notion of dressing up shorts. These soft sage green shorts poof and pucker out like a little skirt. The high paper-bag waist redefines the waistline. To offset the bottom half, I chose a more form-fitting top and a simple fitted blazer. Platform sandals, (my favorite new shoe), and sandy beige flower pattern tights elongated my legs. I exchanged the sausage-effect causing DKNY tights that I had worn earlier for Nordstrom’s own brand. The House in the Clouds recommends them!

Last time I wore shorts I seemed to have piqued your interest. Have any of you given though to how you would execute this? I’m curious at how you’re thinking of putting an outfit with shorts together. Now that I’ve come back from vacation I’d like to put a “Show me your shorts” blog event together! Who’s in? You know you want to!

{ full time fabulous blog event: }

This is my first Full Time Fabulous blog event. The theme is to create a visual representation of how our location in the world influences us. As a citizen of the world, I chose to express myself solely through pictures I’ve taken over the past couple of years. I wanted to create a story without words and deliberately left it open to interpretation. For more information, check out Kristy Eléna’s blog.

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing Pantone's color of the year, honeysuckle, with jeans
Honeysuckle and cedar, from Pantone’s colors of the year palette

I realized this morning that I have become so accustomed to wearing dresses everyday that pants, especially jeans, have become a novelty. I’ve had this blouse for a few months and was itching to wear it.

{ style tip: }

Wearing denim to work requires some attention to detail so as not to appear unprofessional, even in a casual atmosphere. A soft blouse is comfortable but still looks polished. Dressier shoes with a low or medium heel in a similar color palette add an unpredictable touch.

How do you wear your denim to work? Do you choose fun tops and funky flats, or do you dress them up with a structured shirt, heels and a blazer? Or do you pick something in between?

Hair success by Nicole Goodman

If you’re wondering why my hair looks so good, (weren’t you?), it’s because I just had the most wonderful and talented Nicole Goodman from Sakura work her magic. But you say my hair has always looked pretty good. Yes, and that’s my point. She waved her magic wand scissors over The Mop™ shortly before I started blogging. You just don’t know what it used to look like and we’re going to keep it that way.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Let’s just say I don’t have straight hair, I don’t have curly hair and I don’t have blond hair but I’ve maximized the heck out The Mop’s™ potential and I’m quite pleased with the results. So if you live in the San Francisco/Oakland area and you finally succumbed to the truth that your hair needs a miracle, or just a trim and some highlights, do not wait any longer. Really.

Check out her blog for style tips and inspiration. It’s chock-full of ideas. Here’s the full scoop:

Make-up kit from Joe Fresh Style
Sample kit

As I mentioned yesterday, Style Nation had some pretty awesome sponsors. I wanted to review the goodies I got from Joe Fresh. I received a kit with two lip glosses, a pink lipstick, a gold cream eyeshadow, a cream blush and two nail polishes: orchid lavender and orange. I’m wearing all but the clear gloss and nail polishes, which I tried on earlier. The colors were bright and vibrant, I can’t wait to paint all my fingers rather than just two!

The cream eyeshadow glided on easily and stayed put all day. It felt light, never greasy. I love gold eyeshadow, it makes my inner magpie happy. The cream blusher was equally easy to apply. It passed the test, my cheeks still look pink and dewy. While I thought the pink coral color might be more complimentary on a creamy white skin tone, it blended well into my olive skin. The pink lipstick was bright and a bit too opaque for my liking, I prefer sheer with golden undertones. I applied lipgloss over it. While the effect was a nice gloss, it felt too heavy, I’m a lip balm girl. Overall, I would say that the products live up to the name: Fresh. Perfect for the young and young at heart, (that’s me!) The palette I received will be perfect through spring and summer.

Good news for The House in the Clouds, I’m going to be around this weekend! After over a month and a half of being out of town every weekend, I have made peace with being home. This might mean missing one of the most epic snow weekends this season, I could have only gone one day anyway. Don’t worry, there’s next weekend, I’m not completely crazy. I’m pretty sure my body will be happy to sleep in past 7 A.M. at least once this winter. Yeah, pretty sure. And I wore green shoes today. You saw that, right?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
