Fake it till you make it

26 Oct

{ personal: }

I’m not advocating you lie or mislead anyone. I’m talking specifically about the practice of practicing. This came up in a class I take recently, some participants were unclear on the supposed implications of deceiving another. The idea behind faking it until you fully realize it is the earnest commitment to a particular value system.

For example, I have been shockingly unladylike behind the wheel. I have been but I don’t want to be. Since tapping into my saintlier side hasn’t always quite arrived to me with the ease and grace I’m working towards, for lack of better terms, I have faked it. At times, I have expressed my passionate sentiments and then retracted it. Other times, I have found enough space to consider and censor what I might have said, thereby amending it before verbalizing it.

Lately, I find that I often, though not always, have no reaction. After all, I’m not in bumper to bumper traffic by myself. We’re all in it together, no single driver is responsible for this, no particular individual is out to get me. But I had to fake it a lot to get to this place. I practiced being the person I wanted to be until I became it.

There I am, in traffic, hanging out until I get through it, preferably with some good tunes coming through the speakers. And yes, I’m that person rockin’ out by herself in traffic. In her paisley dress and awesome haircut.

Making it work

For fear of dropping off the blogosphere completely, consider this an interim update. I’ve been sick for a couple weeks and have been out of commission. Rather than dwelling on all the things I haven’t been able to do–the list is too long–let’s focus on what I have been able to do. Sleep, read and paint my nails. They’ve never looked so good!

And that dress? I made that $14.99 work for me, wouldn’t you agree?

Not just for experts only—Getting your blog off the ground.

The Wall at Kirkwood. Our favorite run of the day

A couple days ago it dawned on me that although my commenting system was greatly improved since my move from Blogger to WordPress, it was still missing a crucial element. I had been taking the time to reply to many of the comments left by you for naught. Without a reply notification plug-in, you would never know I had done so. On one hand, it seemed so trivial, on the other, it was a glaringly obvious how much more I had to learn.

I reflected on the fact that it was barely six months ago when I thought starting a blog would be fun. Well, it’s been a lot of fun. And it’s been a lot of hard work. Blogging is not limited to experts only, fortunately, there are some wonderful souls out there who have taken the care and time to share their experiences and knowledge base with the rest of us.

Without them, this blog would not be what it is today. My success here and anywhere else, is and always has been, the result of collaboration and support. I would like to share a few of the resources I turned to in the past few months. By no means is this list complete, it’s merely a sampling of the information out there. If you’re already blogging, or are thinking of starting, check out some of these links. I have relied on the first seven at different times, the rest I think you might find useful.

Build a better blog

While I couldn’t remember the original site I turned to for grammatical assistance, I did find this one which is equally helpful. You may be the smartest cookie around but if you are misspelling regularly and don’t have the basics of English grammar down, your readers are going to think you’re dumb. Or worse yet, that you just don’t care. Like I said, blogging is fun but it’s also hard work.

Last but not least, last week I wrote about the correlation between your blog and branding. It’s a topic I’ve reflected upon on this journey and believe it’s good food for thought. While I may still have a long way to go, I’m confident that I’m headed in the right direction. I’m enjoying the journey and hope you are, too.

30 for 30 Winter, day 15. Riding the DYI horse

23 Feb

Rockin’ the plaid and patterns

One obi belt coming right up

You say “belt”, I say “bracelet”

Check it out! I’m feeling good about myself because I’m wearing two things I made today. That’s right, look who’s riding high and mighty on her DYI horse. Me!

I mentioned buying a couple of silk ties recently to make an obi belt, as seen in this tutorial from Angie of Fashion Me Blog. I did it! I made the belt and then I broke a bunch of rules about mixing patterns and look what came of it. Uh-huh.

On top of that, see that cool leather cuff with the embroidery on it? Yeah, that used to be a belt. I thrifted that little puppy, trimmed it, punched a hole in it and wore it. The beauty of these two projects is that they took almost no time. Extra bonus points!

Don’t forget to enter my first ever giveaway! Details here.

Deets: Plaid dress/Gifted from Dotty of Dash Dot Dotty, hot pink tank top/unknown, brown tights/unknown, vegan brown suede boots/Munro, obi belt/me, necklace/Anthropologie, hand-carved wood earrings/Chicago, three kitties ring/gifted.
