Daily outfit and style tip, wearing aqua cardigan, white t-shirt, red pants

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing aqua cardigan, white t-shirt, red pants

There are days when a nice tomato red looks so right with a crisp white t-shirt, especially when that t-shirt’s burnout lets the brightest cyan tank top peek through. I love this particular take on the patriotic combo because the colors are just slightly left of center; the blue is a really rich aqua, the tomato red has an orange hue. To top it off, the white is quite transparent.

I’m doing my best to summon the sunshine with these bright colors, you can see the thin misty fog in the background. It did eventually burn off by mid-day. It is still summer after all.

{ style tip: }

I like to experiment with accessorizing. Instead of wearing a necklace I wrapped a kerchief around my neck for prosperity, I’ve had it for at least ten years. It reminds me of being in Provence. I was happily wearing red pants even back in 2001. I love wearing good memories.

Do you ever find yourself wearing an item that reminds you of something wonderful? Do share, I really enjoy reading your comments and getting to know my readers better.

Packing for vacation, part 2

23 Jun

{ personal: }

I posted the first part of packing for vacation yesterday when I found my missing Friend Friday piece. Here lies the moment of truth. If you didn’t catch my updates on The House in the Clouds’ facebook page, following is a quick recap of the last three weeks.

We started our honeymoon in Paris and stayed with one of our best friends for five days. (I’m going to be writing about my observation of Parisian style on Style Pint’s blog soon and will keep you posted, check her out in the meantime.) Paris was warm, we walked a lot as expected. It was an easy city to dress for. Our schedule was nicely paced and our dinners were fantastic.

We then flew to Barcelona, picked up our rental car and drove to Calellea, in Costa Brava. The bed and breakfast run by British ex-pats was absolutely charming, I think of this as our first honeymoon suite. The small coastal town was beautiful and dreamy, there’s nothing better to me than the Mediterranean Sea and coastline. Light rains fell intermittently though the days were still warm. We spent one day exploring a coastline trail and subsequent little pockets of beaches.

After Costa Brava, we hit the road and spent the next week driving through the Pyrenees. The temperature cooled as most of Europe was hit with a cold and wet spell. The rain didn’t stop us from hiking twice but it did get us sopping wet! I dressed for comfort on days mostly spent in the car.

We wrapped up our northernly drive with a few days in Gascony for some Armagnac tasting. We stayed at a bed and breakfast in a former mansion. The food was divine and the service was attentive and inviting. One day was devoted to visiting a couple local producers and tasting their wares. This experience was truly unique, the proprietors were warm and welcoming, spending hours showing us around. The weather was still cool and drizzly throughout, I found it challenging to dress in my summer clothes and kept bundling up with scarves.

Hitting the Basque country, we made a quick detour to see the Guggenheim in Bilbao before dropping off our car at the airport and returning to Barcelona. The next four days were spent walking the city, taking in the sights and being enthralled with Gaudi’s architectural genius along with staying up late. The weather was hot and the style was casual. The cool and wet spell was finally over.

After four days, we caught a plane back to Paris, had one last mind-blowing dinner with our friend and flew home the next day.

Here’s what made it into the suitcase:

  • Dresses, 3: 2 short, 1 maxi. Report: the purple stretch jersey dress was perfect for wearing alone in Barcelona and layering with leggings on a cooler day in Gascony. The lightweight orange summer dress was perfect for Calellea and Barcelona, it was pretty but casual enough for the coast. I’m sad to report the maxi dress never made an appearance. It was too casual for nice evening dinners and would have been great for Barcelona. I admit I forgot about it on the couple days it would have been perfect for.

  • Shorts, 1: Dressy cotton. Report: I dressed up these shorts a few times, they worked well for days in Paris and Barcelona, and again on our last night’s dinner in Barcelona.

  • Pants, 3: Cargo, seersucker, stretchy. Report: The cargo pants were worn numerous times in Paris and through the cooler days. The seersucker pants were so versatile that I wore them in every city. The stretchy wide-leg pants were my go-to pants for the day-long drives and long flights because they were so comfortable with their four-way stretch.

  • Tank tops, 2: 1 plain solid, 1 dressy. Report: The casual solid salmon tank got a lot of wear, both alone and under one of the looser-fitting tops. The dressy pink lace tank top was only worn once.

  • Scarves, 2: 1 warm, 1 lacy. Report: I got a lot of mileage out of the warmer shawl but only wore the lacy scarf once or twice.

  • Tops, 3: 1 print t-shirt, 1 over-size sequined t-shirt, 1 tunic. Report: The white t-shirt with a blue floral print was a favorite. I washed it twice, it looked good with practically everything. The over-size sequined t-shirt was worn numerous times, too. Same with the tunic. I kept rotating shirts during the cold wet week through the Pyrenees, it was just too cold to wear dresses.

  • Cardigans, 3: 1 lightweight lacy, 1 cashmere, 1 cotton kimono style. Report: The lightweight salmon cardi got plenty of wear but I only wore the orange kimono style once. The cashmere aqua cardi was worn every day that it wasn’t hot. How am I not sick of it yet? You’ve probably seen me wear it all winter, it’s the softest, warmest thing.

  • Shoes, 4: 1 sandal, 1 dressy shoe, 1 flat comfort shoe, 1 flat stylish shoe. Report: The flat stylish sequined shoe gave me a blister on day one which made wearing the dressy shoe really painful, I tucked the dressy shoes away for the rest of the trip. The black Dansko sandals were my favorites, the straps across the tops were adjusted according to the heat factor and foot swelling. The flat comfort shoes were the warmest to wear during the cold spell but were too hot and binding on the hot days.

There you have it. Overall, I did very well and got a lot of wear out of almost everything. At the last minute I threw a pair of thick black yoga pants into my suitcase, I still had so much room to spare. They turned out to play a very crucial role when hiking in the rain, I had only brought a pair of lightweight hiking capris and would have been freezing all day. I also added a couple nicer dresses which I wore several times.

The winners: The purple jersey and orange lightweight dresses were tied. The seersucker and stretchy pants were tied, also. The white t-shirt won out over the other t’s, it was polyester and dried very quickly after being hand-washed which kept it fresh. Overall, the cashmere aqua cardi and black sandals took the prize.

The losers: The maxi dress, the dressy high heels and the lacy scarf were lowest on the totem pole. I wouldn’t have missed them. Not too shabby for trying to plan for so much diversity in activities and weather.

For more general and location photos of our travels, check out The Husband’s blog. He painstakingly documented regularly with a brief description and a handful of photos. It was truly incredible!

I also want to extend a special thanks to my guest bloggers, it was such a relief knowing you were in good hands in my absence. I hope they’ve made new fans out of you!

Embrace the magpie

Party feet!

I have an inner magpie that rivals old Hollywood glamour. The problem with this is that I don’t have the lifestyle to express it. Sequins and rhinestones and glitter, oh my; those are all lovely words to my ears. They enchant me with their song of ritz and glitz, I want to add feather boas and faux fur stoles to their melody and stroll.

If I can’t have that, I can have this: Tom’s silver glitter slip-ons.

I wore the discoteque on my feet all day, I’m going to do it again, too. I’d been coveting them for a while, the desire for glitter growing even more potent when my friend Nicole got a pair of gold ones. I’ve been waiting until I could justify wearing a light spring shoe. My friends, the time has come. As the day refused to quit I ran laps in what felt like slippers on my feet. Awesome slippers. One could say I’m a fan.

{ style tip: }

You really can wear something extravagant and glittery during the day, style and context are everything. The glitter made these shoes fun and gave them plenty of character, however, the casual form and style made them easy to wear with a cotton skirt and t-shirt. I chose to balance the glitter with a bold silver necklace and matching cuff. The outfit ended up well-balanced and comfortable.

Paper Doll Project

11 May

{ paper doll project: }

Daily outfit and style tips, wearing long straight brown skirt, white tunic

Stripes for spring!

Welcome to the Paper Doll Project, where you dress another style blogger and they style you. Lori, of Lori’s Wardrobe, and I were partnered to style each other. This is my first time participating, I’ve been looking forward to it for a while. Check out what I suggested for Lori. I asked her to style the skirt I’m wearing, I love what she came up with, right down to the owl necklace. I added the shawl because today was strangely cold. Isn’t this fun?

{ info: }

Do you want to participate in the Paper Doll Project? Do you want another style blogger to style you for a day? Do you want to style someone else? Check out the details here. Props to the lovely Suze of Miss Vinyl Ahoy for getting us to play dress up. If you have a passion for color like I do, you’ll love her outfits. I think she’s the cat’s meow!

A sleek line

04 May

{ daily outfit: }

Daily outfit and style tip, wearing wide-leg hemp pants and white tunic
Sleek in white

It’s not that I don’t love white, it’s that upon closer inspection I’ve discovered I have so little of it.

It’s never about how much you have, it’s how you use it.

There’s more beneath the surface of this outfit. On Sunday I decided that I should get my sewing privileges revoked if I didn’t actually sew something soon. One can’t beg Santa for a sewing machine and not sew. Even if Santa is one’s husband. Lo and behold, I came across my favorite wide-leg hemp pants while rummaging through the pile of things to alter. Too big to wear, do I dare? Yes, I dare.

I took the waistband apart carefully, took a few inches out and put the whole precarious endeavor back together. I’m pretty proud of the end result considering that I technically winged it. I can use a sewing machine but I don’t claim to know how to sew; I’m working on it. Check out more photos of my handywork on my facebook page.

To see how others are wearing white, check out Pretty Shiny Sparkly’s Bloggers Do It Better “White Out” challenge this week. While I didn’t technically participate, I was inspired to create an outfit based on hearing about the challenge.

{ style tip: }

The wide legs were offset by a form-fitting top to create a sleek silhouette. When wearing baggy bottoms, a form-fitting top offers a sharp contrast and keeps your look from getting frumpy.

Baggy wide-leg pants are so light and comfortable on a hot day. Do you have a pair? What do you wear them with?

Confession

02 May

{ daily outfit: }

Daily outfit and style tips, wearing white shorts and vintage ivory blouse
A sophomore attempt

I have a confession to make. I have never before in my life dressed up a pair of shorts. Not until last month, anyway. After seeing Stephanie of The Loudmouth and her friend Bryn rock the shorts in Vegas, I knew I had to try it. I dipped my toes, so to speak, at my friend’s birthday party knowing I was in a safe place should things start feeling awkward. As it turns out everything worked out just fine. I’m always amazed at how trying something new can feel so daunting.

I figured if I could pull it off once, I can pull off again.

I picked up these litte babies a few weeks ago, the eyelets and the fact that they’re made of organic cotton did me in. I had a vision of wearing them out on a date. We were invited to a tequila tasting in San Francisco on Saturday, which we followed up with dinner at a new restaurant. It was a fairly warm late afternoon and I had my coat with me. For those of you who don’t know San Francisco’s weather, it rarely gets hot and often gets chilly in the evenings, hence the precautionary coat. My outfit was incredibly comfortable—of course it was—I was wearing shorts! I was even complimented which is always a nice treat.

Daily outfit and style tips, wearing white shorts and gold tights
The gold tights are very shimmery

We tasted about six brands of tequila; starting with blanco, continuing with reposado and finishing with añejo. If they offered a special reserve of some sort we tasted those also at the end. The concept behind tasting the blanco first is that it’s still young and the forward flavor is representative of what will be the foundation which carries into the more aged reposado and añejo. If you don’t like the blanco at all, it’s likely that you won’t enjoy the more aged tequila of that harvest either.

And you thought this blog was just about fashion.

This is what happens when you’re married to a man who knows his spirits. A little is bound to rub off. My favorite tequila of the night was the Casa 7 Leguas. As much fun as it was to taste tequila there was only so much stimulation my palate could handle before calling it quits. As you can imagine, we had a lovely time.

{ style tip: }

Go for it! Be adventurous and daring, try something new! If it feels daunting, give it a trial run when visiting close friends just like I did. You’ll be more comfortable and should there be a wardrobe malfunction you can all have a good laugh.

Spring has sprung

29 Mar
Daily outfit white tuxedo shirt, burgundy boyfriend cardigan and obi belt
Formal. But casual.

Some days feel like a rebirth of sorts. Some weeks are bullies pushing their sunshine way into my heart and soul. This happens to be one of those weeks. Patience finds itself at the end of a road, motivation runs at an all-time high. I have things I want to do and I’m going to start doing them now.

Daily outfit white tuxedo shirt, burgundy boyfriend cardigan
Spring has sprung

I’ve been coming home these past few weeks to a sun-filled living room, spring bursting through the windows without permission. I picked up a magazine tonight while grocery shopping. I sat on my bed and read for twenty minutes. For the first time in months I didn’t feel like I was running behind.

Daily outfit white tuxedo shirt, burgundy boyfriend cardigan
Obi belt restyled from old neckties, a tip from Angie of Fashion Me Blog

I still aspire to read for hours and hours, flipping switches and turning on lights while the light changes around me. But you know what? I’ll take those twenty minutes, I’ll laugh at the silly antics occurring in my household and it will feel really, really good. Spring is finally here in my world. How do you like that hot pink lip gloss from Joe Fresh? Spring landed right here on my face!

Daily outfit white tuxedo shirt, burgundy boyfriend cardigan and obi belt with black skinny jeans.
Coworker looks at my shoes and says “new wheels?” Me: “yes”

How is spring treating you? Do you find yourself emerging? Do you find yourself recharged? I’m dedicating this post to Bella of The Citizen Rosebud. We have had very different objectives for our Northern California weather. I want storm after storm, it means snowboarding.

Bella, this sunshine is for you, honey.

Awesome!

20 Mar
Daily outfit of t-shirt dress, waving hello in my garden
Hello there!
Daily outfit colorful scarf with t-shirt dress, laughing
A striped scarf added a touch color

The house is calm , the rain has stopped and the air is fresh. The sunshine is casting a warm glow on the trees outside my window. I celebrated the birthday of one my dearest friends, Coley, last night. Today, I had two chocolate chip cookies courtesy of the birthday girl. She is the true definition of awesome.

Some days are just perfect like that.

I wore this simple t-shirt dress the previous weekend in Las Vegas. It was lightweight enough to throw on with nothing more than casual shoes on a hot day. I’ve since discovered that it’s also versatile enough to dress up with tights and a belt for work. The image on the dress is pretty absurd. It’s a black and white photo of a couple sitting by the water’s edge. It makes no sense which makes me even fonder of it.

Deets: T-shirt dress/ModCloth, red skinny belt/Georgiou, aqua tights/unknown, black mary-jane shoes/Aravon, scarf/thrifted.

Thanks for hanging in there!

I couldn’t resist having my hubby take my photo in his office. Yes! His office! He really does have an oversized bean bag chair like that, and we really do work at the same company. (We had to meet somewhere seven years ago.) I told you I’d bring the red for last Friday’s Go Red for Women. It’s here at last!
